Velocity 8.1-0 Released

August 1st, 2011 by Michael Pointer

Velocity version 8.1-0 is now generally available.

Velocity 8.1 has a number of enhancements focused around the usability, scalability and performance of Velocity. Top features include:

  • Crawler scalability enabling Velocity to take full advantage of today’s multi-core and multiprocessor computer systems ensuring customers can crawl more documents on a single machine reducing their total cost of ownership.
  • New updated three column display adding new configuration options for customers to improve the overall usability of their solution.
  • Efficient paging enabling users to now click through to the 2 millionth result and eliminating any hard limits on the number of results a user can view. This is important in R&D, legal discovery and intelligence applications where viewing every result is critical.
  • Modular connector framework which will allow us to release new connectors (and connector fixes) independent of a full Velocity release. This will give customers a way to seamlessly add new content without going through a full Velocity upgrade.
  • In addition, we are also releasing the new IO SharePoint connector. This new connector offers the same critical functionality as our older SharePoint 2007 & 2010 connector along with valuable enhancements that include:
    • Continuous updates enabling users to view more quickly content changes within SharePoint using a “light touch” approach that minimizes impact on performance. Users will now have updated content immediately available for real-time decision making.
    • Ability to view a single blog and all of its related comments condensed into a single search result. This enables users to see the context of blog comments and more efficiently use search results.
    • Advanced presentation and browsing of SharePoint list items. When searches return items from SharePoint lists that use SharePoint version tracking, Velocity intelligently assembles all of the versions of the list item into a single search result. Users can then browse the item and all of its versions logically and efficiently to find the desired content. This capability provides a superior user experience in contrast to the standard SharePoint search where each item version appears as a separate item, clogging the search results with redundant information and forcing users to determine the right item from many choices.
    • Enhanced security. The IO SharePoint connector can collect all user profile information for a user, enabling more granular security and access control than the traditional user and group permission model.
