Vivisimo Chief Scientist Says Developing Enterprise Search Strategy is Key to Showing Search ROI

Vivisimo Strategist Addresses IT Experts

Pittsburgh, PA — Knowledge is power, and information is the path to knowledge. Smart organizations get it. Others fall behind, slowed by their inability to readily access and profit by the huge amounts of data generated and stored every day. The secret for progressive companies is the effective use of enterprise search.

Jerome Pesenti, chief scientist for Vivisimo (vivisimo.com) a Pittsburgh-based global leader in enterprise search, covers this topic in a talk Monday, “Thinking Outside the (Search) Box,” about how to develop a winning strategy for enterprise search. Pesenti will address the Western Pennsylvania Enterprise Architecture Forum’s August meeting. See http://www.wpeaf.org/ for more information.

The key to converting hidden or siloed data into valuable corporate assets, says Pesenti, is to make sure users’ needs are carefully considered when integrating enterprise search into an organization’s strategic goals. By combining what users need and want with organizational goals—increasing collaboration and accelerating innovation, for example—business leaders can implement an enterprise search strategy that produces measurable results. For instance, Vivisimo customer Modine Manufacturing Co. estimates saving about $3.6 million with an intranet powered by the Vivisimo Velocity Search Platform™. A case study on Modine’s enterprise search strategy is available at http://vivisimo.com/docs/casemodine.

IT managers know they have to improve their organization’s enterprise search, but too many fail to act. A recent survey by AIIM (www.aiim.org), “Findability: The Art and Science of Making Content Easy to Find,” found that nearly half of those surveyed believe better access to information is critical yet had no formal strategy to improve retrieval. The same study also found that about half of all respondents said their jobs suffer as a result of poor findability.

“Getting enterprise search right takes skill and commitment, but the payoff is an organization whose people are more productive, quicker to collaborate and innovate, and more satisfied,” says Pesenti. “Deploying enterprise search properly also gives business leaders the tools they need for measuring results and for showing a positive return on their IT investment.”
